After all these years I am still learning how subtle spiritual darkness can be when capturing the mind of a people. Few serious followers of Jesus would openly and outwardly encourage their children to become fascinated and obsessed with the world of the occult, darkness, and blasphemous caricatures of the Living God.
Regretfully, this very thing has not only happened but is celebrated among vast numbers of believers. Beginning with the world of occult and magic in the Harry Potter series and continuing into the hugely popular Twilight series whose hero and heartthrob to millions of teens is a vampire from the dark world of the demonic and dead.
Then we have The Shack being bought off the book store shelves by the hundreds of thousands by believers worldwide. There remains an excited buzz about how wonderful and deeply spiritual this book is that portrays God as a black woman, Jesus as the hunky lumberjack type, and the Holy Spirit can best be described as Tinker Bell. While the story may be entertaining, the real truth is that it entertainingly blasphemous. I have a difficult time picturing Isaiah coming from his vision of the Lord, high and lifted up in the temple to proclaiming how wonderful the portrayal of this same God is in this book.
Parents should be wary of encouraging the fascination of their children in the occult and world of darkness. Their level of spiritual discernment may not be high enough to understand the draw of the supernatural world. Not many return from there once they are lured in. Satan is subtle and will use what is seemingly harmless entertainment to get a hook into a generation. Would that our teens and young adults were as fascinated by the presence and power of God as they are of magic and vampires.
The Bible declares that one of the end time events will be the deception of even the elect. Even so, come Lord Jesus.
I read "The Shack" not really knowing what it was about. Into the story I kept going "What kind strange idea are they coming up with". I felt like the way God was portraited was strange and wrong. The book went out the door.
